CHORUSWORLD MUSICTRAD

Amicitia Chorus was born from the desire to hear Portuguese musical heritage as living matter. Founded in 2018, the choir defines itself as a space for experimentation, where tradition is not preserved as a relic but activated as a creative possibility. We start from the roots to open new paths, combining the rigour of choral practice with a careful perception of what remains in the voices of the people.

The artistic vision of Amicitia Chorus unfolds through three complementary creative axes: the reinterpretation of traditional repertoire through distinctive arrangements that honour the oral essence of popular song; the adaptation of contemporary authored works, fostering a dialogue between cultural heritage and modern Portuguese music; and the creation of original compositions inspired by ethnographic research, field recordings, and gestures drawn from intangible cultural practices. Its mission is to keep Portuguese musical heritage vibrantly alive by nurturing new compositions and choral experiences that connect past and future.

The universe of Amicitia extends far beyond the voice, weaving body, gesture and image into an immersive and singular performative experience. Traditional instruments such as the bass drum and adufe act as natural extensions of the collective voice, while body percussion embodies rhythm within the performers, amplifying their stage presence. Original costumes fuse Portuguese traditional waistcoats with skirts inspired by Bulgarian attire, layered over trousers to create a distinctive, contemporary and symbolic aesthetic.
